Now “Ek main aur Ek tu” is a film you’ll either like or passionately despise. Like? Because there is some change you are expecting in a hindi film from a long long time. Despise? Because you may not be used to the unusual conclusion of this film. If you ask me was I satisfied with the unconventional ending, then I have to admit, I was!
A free-spirited hair dresser Riahana and a boot lace architect Rahul get drunk one night, and wake up the next morning to find out they’re married. As they decide to annul the marriage, the two realize that they have a connection. The film is typically a random stuff in its early moments and you exactly know where the film is heading.Yet the characters are so real that at times you may find yourself connecting with them(atleast I did). The characters grow on you despite them facing the usual problems like Imran’s controlling parents and Kareena’s character is quiet similar to that of Geet from “Jab we met”.
This is a narrative that mainly unfolds through dialouges which may be one of the reasons why this is film in India is getting thumbs down from the masses.
Bollywood purists are gonna totally disagree with my verdict because there is no song where the guy is singing to her and she runs to him through fields, the songs are a part of the narrative and they nowhere interupt the momentum, the humour although falls flat at times is not puerile, the characters deliver their lines to perfection instead of yelling out, and mainly because all the characters are real.
Director Shakun Batra extracts fine performance from all the actors right from Imran-Kareena to that of Ram Kapoor’s who is in a small role but leaves a lasting impression. Amit Trivedi’s music is one of the high points of this film.
At 1 hour 45 minutes, this film deserves a watch and mercifully and doesn’t drag on endlessly. Its far from great, and is an above average entertainer. Watch out for the ending where the writers display a rare maturity about relationships. I’m going to go with a generous 3 out of 5. Watch it and then pass on your verdict!
